Deficit, black economy, symbols of freedom (Mickey Mouse, Levi’s jeans), smuggling of goodies, mafia…
You might be asking yourself what connects all these topics?
Stirian Artist in Residence Lina Albrikiene (Vilnius) will explain the link and give an overview of the restrictions in the Soviet Union.
(The artist would appreciate it if you came dressed in your Levi’s jeans or/and Mickey Mouse garment, in order to feel the spirit of freedom.)
Lina Albrikiene is also going to show her new video installation “Convey”, which was recently presented in Kunsthalle Exnergasse (WUK) in Vienna. The installation is inspired by the novel "Das Weisse Leintuch" (A. Škema). In the video she disassembles allegorical elements from its original creative context in order to explore the figure of the contemporary human being as a mere conveyor of his/her own destruction.
Bernhard Wolf (Graz) is going to contribute by presenting a series of photos by Aleksander Petlura, a Moscow artist who is collecting old russian costumes he then uses for his "photo stories" in which he describes the Russian history and culture.
Lina Albrikiene is not coming from the country surrounded by mountains. In fact, she was born in the flatland - in Lithuania. Artist has been in residency programs in Austria already few times (Vienna, Krems). It is a relevant field for her artistic researches, which mostly are connected with history. During her studies Albrikiene worked on individual and collective memory topics. Since few years artist is developing and exhibiting projects based on the historical themes sometimes plunging into human being and existence questions revealing her conceptual approach through video, installation, sound and photography. Her working method is based on a long research process by analyzing facts and combining them with visual artifacts and parallels, which creates individual perception the same as interpretation by relating all the pieces of installation.
In 2009 Albrikiene finished her studies (BA, MA) in photography and media art at the Art Academy of Vilnius. In 2011 she was awarded by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture Grand Prize for the young artist debut and was announced as the Grand Prize Winner at the ‘Young European Creators’ biennial (Paris). Artist did several residence programs in ‘Air – Artist in Residence Kultur Kontakt Austria’ (2017, Vienna), ‘Air – Artist in Residence’ (2015, Krems), ‘Experimental film’ (2015, Binissalem), ‘JCE residency’ (2012, Paris). ‘POT in Kassel’ (2012, Kassel). In 2017, 2015 and 2014 she received Individual Artist Prizes from Lithuanian Council for Culture and in 2011 Individual Artist Prize from Ministry of Culture. Since 2006 she is a member of Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists Association and since 2018 -2019 she was a member of association on board.
She had solo exhibitions in Lithuania and Mexico (Merida) and group shows in Vienna, St. Polten, Melk, Mexico City, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Riga, Hamburg, Prague, Slovakia, Vilnius, Minsk and etc.
