St.A.i.R. Gábor Rieder

Gábor Rieder is a guest at FORUM STADTPARK as Styrian Artist in Residence until July 2024.

As freelancer art historian, curator, editor and art advisor, Gábor Rieder, PhD (b. 1978, Budapest, HU) is active in both the terrains of the academic research of post war art and the for-profit contemporary art world in Budapest in the last two decades. He studied art history and literature and earned his doctorate in 2011.

As researcher and critic he is author of a several books and catalogs and hundreds of studies and reviews, focusing on the contemporary and post-war art in Hungary, Western and Eastern-European modernism, socialist realism, art market tendencies, etc.

He has worked is many positions in the last decade: as editor-in-chief of contemporary magazines (such as Flash Art Hungary and Artkartell), art director of Gallery Weekend Budapest, curator-at-large art at Art+Text Budapest and art director of Artkartell projectspace, among others. He presently serves as book editor of Kieselbach Gallery, curator of the Esterhazy Art Award, advisor of the Hungarian National Bank and Hungarian director of BuBu Program.

Based in Budapest he curated various shows, from huge museum exhibitions to small non-profit solos, especially focused on the youngest generation of the Hungarian art. He was the co-editor of the “Youhu”, a book about the crème de la crème of the Hungarian Millennial artists.

His next book, coming out in the Summer of 2024, is telling a Cold War story, a unique artistic cooperation across the Iron Curtain: the collaboration between the op-art star Victor Vasarely and the Hungarian abstract artist, János Fajó.
