Colonial Entanglements

The city walking tour series ‘Colonial Entanglements in Graz’ attempts to uncover various traces of colonial heritage, colonial presence and resistance to it in Graz.

The first level of consideration is colonial and racist symbols that are still present in the cityscape and represent a painful part of everyday confrontation with the city's colonial heritage. Another continuity is the so-called ‘soft’ colonialism that has shaped Austria in Southeast Europe from the days of the Habsburg Monarchy to the present day. The third focus is the question of current neocolonial and imperial entanglements.

The walks visit places in Graz that tell us something about these three interwoven dimensions – through specific monuments, street names, symbols, or through gaps, omissions and repressions. In addition, they are accompanied by the question of the relationship between historical colonial oppression and contemporary everyday racism. During the walks, there will be an opportunity to engage in dialogue and share experiences and resistant knowledge.
