PROGRAM

In 2024, Vincent Pongrácz and Yvonne Moriel (both were honoured as Best Live Act and Best Newcomer respectively at the Austrian Jazz Awards at the end of 2024) met Alex Kranabetter and Valentin Duit for the first time as part of the ‘Synesthetic Wednesday’ concert series to perform a joint, largely free set as a quartet.

This combination of four very individual artists with strong artistic personalities, whose creativity is united in the collectively led quartet, immediately proved to be an extremely exciting mix, which now finds a natural continuation through the subsequent engagement with ‘open music’.

The music can probably best be described as experimental noise jazz, with free improvisation being the unifying element. Although the three wind instruments take on completely different roles in this formation, they also meet again and again in their quasi-traditional role as melody instruments. Pongrácz performs on the bass clarinet and with FX in bass function and Kranabetter, whose trumpet is often no longer perceived as an acoustic instrument, as a noise master on the electronics.

In contrast, Moriel on saxophone and Duit on drums play purely acoustically and with instrument-specific sound enhancements. In addition to their different musical backgrounds, the four artists are united by their attentiveness, their improvisational sensibility, but also the courage to create chaos, which repeatedly dissolves in unexpected directions, finds new directions and combines with the band members' compositions.
