ONE MONUMENT IN TIME

60 Years FORUM STADTPARK

It is part of the essence of public monuments to interweave the present and thus everyday urban life with a collective past. In Graz's Stadtpark, too, monuments function both spatially and temporally as fixed points that show us the passing of time as we walk by. Here, however, many a monument has lost its historically reminiscent function and has become a mere backdrop.

Where strict monument protection covers the entire park like a leaden cloak, artists are all the more challenged to become active with subtle interventions and to undermine the all too familiar with their temporary settings: What could conceivable monuments do today? Where are the points of contact with what moves us today? And how temporary can a so-called "monument" actually be?

ONE MONUMENT IN TIME

Schallaktion / Sonic actions

ONE MONUMENT IN TIME

08.01. - 15.01.2022
Winfried Ritsch

Sonic actions: 7*7 7sec
7x7 tiny compositions for a sound system
Vintage loudspeakers on vertical crossbar, mono player

Realisation: Institute for Electronic Music in collaboration with the Atelier Algorythmics and curated works by invited artists*.

For 7 days from 10h07 to 19h07, 7 minutes after the hour, a 7-second composition will be sent into the city as a sound action from a collection of many different loudspeakers on the roof of the Forum Stadtpark. The musical messages of the sound sculpture are to be heard all the way to the opera house and are over again before they can be properly grasped by passers-by. The loudspeaker object imagines volume and transience at the same time and becomes a sculpture itself. There are no rehearsals, each sound action is unique and will not be repeated.
