German
For decades, a bronze torchbearer stood in the basement of the Slovenian Cultural Association Radsberg/Radiše in Carinthia/Koroška. Croatian artist Marijan Matijević (1907–1971) created the figure in the late 1940s, along with two other monuments commemorating the partisan resistance in Carinthia/Koroška. This largest resistance movement within the German Reich was suppressed in Austria after 1945, and the statue was never erected.
After nearly 80 years in storage, it is time to present this figure to the public and discuss it: What does its story reveal about the resistance against the “Third Reich”? And what can we learn today from the partisans’ anti-fascist resistance?
