As part of the annual programme, we also want to deal with controversy in the ECHORAUM.

What does the visual arts have to do with controversy? A lot, of course: disputes between disciplines, disputes about money, disputes between artists, the public, institutions...

There are very old and very current disputes. Important and absolutely superfluous ones.

We want to focus on the contentious practices in the art world itself. What should there actually be more arguments about? Which necessary disputes never come out into the open? What is only argued about behind closed doors? We are founding a kind of self-help group for the disputes that get lost in the field, the disputes about sleazy payments, vindictive curators or egomaniacal collectors. Together, we might find a solution to every dispute.

We should talk more about art, generally.

Instead of talking openly about problems, opinions, tastes and feelings, we usually say quite little. We prefer to just look, drink and listen.

That's what we want to do in the ECHORAUM, too. But at the same time, we want to talk. Or even better discuss, argue a little, and hopefully learn together. Or better yet unlearn? Every question is being worth asking. Every question deserves a possible answer.

We'll meet in the ECHORAUM four times a year, in a special setting designed by the artist Christina Helena Romirer in the FORUM STADTPARK and try to be an echo: an echo for current questions in art, fundamental controversies and for exhibitions and projects that are currently on view in Graz.

In the first edition we will visit the exhibition "Susanna Flock: Cardio" and discuss it.
