Installation in October by Heinz Trenczak. The opening will take place on October 1, 11.00, at Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz.
Recently I told the gallery owner and collector Eugen Lendl about our film projects on the theme of flight and help; Eugen was just a guest at the Kunstraum am Glacís. Immediately he rushed to a stack of old engravings and showed me several sheets with fleeing people - historical events of expulsion and search for protection, handed down biblical and various other motifs from the 17th to the 20th century. Instantly I "saw" huge enlargements of a number of these images in a dozen Graz art spaces, in combination with video sequences from our documentary materials today (Silos Trieste, Greek Diary, 3400 Semmeln - Flüchtende. Helpers. People. 2015-2020). Synchronous. As a cluster.
By juxtaposing historical depictions of flight and persecution with new, current video footage from 2015 to 2020, the project aims to provoke a burst of insight: On the one hand, the topic of flight is as old as humanity, and on the other, we must learn to be prepared for a future that will demand far more of us than before - when, for example, drought and dryness increase in Africa, or when, for example, rising sea levels in southeastern island regions will cause entire atolls to disappear, or when dictatorships increasingly drive people to flee.
