Tour with Anela Dumonjić and Derya Özkaya Öztürk in Turkish, English, and BCMS
The first edition of this urban walk on colonial entanglements in Graz was developed in 2024, when it was almost overrun by around 150 visitors. The walk, which departs from the myth that Austria has no colonial history, will here be continued. Using Graz as an example, it addresses the continuities of racist and colonial imagery in urban spaces, the so-called "soft" colonialism of the Habsburg Empire in south-east Europe, and the current involvement of Graz' economy in neo-colonial projects. At least two walks are planned for 2025.
In addition, a publication based on the research for the walk will be presented in November. Representations of the tour's individual locations will be supplemented by literary contributions from Florian Dietmaier and Fiston Mwanza Mujila (confirmed) and Nava Ebrahimi and Barbi Marković (contacted) and texts by recognised experts on post- and decolonial debates. The publication takes an initial step towards closing a vast gap in research on a topic that has scarcely seen any publications to date.
