Après les Alpes – A scenic reading

Int. Agency for Expropriation

We're on the mountain. It smells a bit like snow. A hiker walks through the frame, 32 children are romping around in a corner. They are supervised by Mrs Gartner. A schoolboy wearing skiing gear stands behind the bar next to the caterer. A children's choir sings. An opportunistic activist sneaks out of the image. An echo spreads...
In “Après les Alpes”, Fiston Mwanza Mujila sketches the post-Alpine era and ponders what would happen if the Alps were sold off because of newly discovered resources. Victoria Fux interweaves Mujila's text with scenographic, dramatic, and performative elements and raises further questions: Will the Alps be transformed into a huge mining company? Who will benefit from the profits? Where will the mining towns be built? Is the Global South suddenly mining in the Global North?

"What people do perfectly is: they draw borders. And these borders are new. Before these borders, the Alps belonged to no one, to no country... The Alps are collective property, they belong to us, and we can offer them as a dowry, distribute them to those who have no mountains in their own country..."
