Understanding Expropriation – Shaping Resistance

Int. Agency for Expropriation

How does displacement work? Where does it take place? Who is affected? And how can we fight it together?

Rising rents, housing speculation, and neoliberal urban policies mean that more and more people are being pushed out of their homes and neighbourhoods. As in many other cities, in Graz, tenants are experiencing contract terminations and forced evictions, while affordable housing is becoming increasingly scarce. However, displacement is not an individual fate, but a structural problem. Being displaced from your familiar surroundings is not just about the loss of a flat. It involves being gradually dispossessed of much more, from your privacy, to your social life, to your capacity to determine your own existence.

In this workshop, we want to look at the mechanisms of displacement, visualise unequal property relations, and explore possibilities for resistance. Together with experts and activists, we will discuss how processes of displacement operate politically and socially, explore the effects they have on individual and collective life, and investigate strategies of resistance.

Let's share experiences, understanding displacement as a process of dispossession – and explore the scope for activist action!

With Sarah Klosterkamp (anthropogeographer and journalist from Cologne), Luisa Gehriger (anthropogeographer and activist from Zurich) and Rivka Saltiel (urban researcher and head of the City & Space Department, Forum Stadtpark Graz)
