(Zero) Waste in the City?

Between Activism and Urban Agenda

Zero waste approaches aim at the conservation of resources and waste reduction through responsible production and consumption. Products, packaging and materials should be reused and recovered without any discharges that are harmful to human or environmental health.

Zero Waste propagates a move away from the so-called “end-of-pipe” disposal technologies of incineration and landfill. The Zero Waste Cities agenda transfers this guiding principle to the municipal level. However, as an urban agenda for waste reduction and resource conservation, zero waste faces a number of specific challenges.

What is produced and consumed in cities seems to be less and less under the direct influence of the city actors themselves.
In this workshop, we want to explore the question of what the Zero Waste Cities agenda is (or could be), what scope for action city actors such as city administrations and governments have in implementing Zero Waste Cities agendas, and what role small-scale initiatives, networks and incremental alternatives play.

The talk will be in German.
